Controlling Anger

One of the possible effects of stress is the creation of anger which comes out of the frustration of being in a situation which appears to be beyond one's own control. Whilst there are of course medical ways of controlling this, many people find that anger management systems such as cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) are the best answer to the problem. Under CBT a therapist talks through the problems with the patient during short sessions over a period of several months, finding out the emotions that are causing the problems and teaching the patient to transfer those negative emotions into positive ones. A great deal of use is made of CBT in correctional Institutes to wean the inmates away from drugs usage or criminal behaviour by helping the patient to understand exactly what it is that is causing the behavioural problem and to develop better ways of coping with these difficulties in ways which are not harmful to the patients themselves or to others. Others can find that group therapy sessions can be a great help since they are able to talk through their problems with other people who face similar challenges, and they are able to seek answers together.
