We are all individuals and different from each other, and so stress causes different reactions in different people. However one of the most important things is to learn how to control it; stress can be a good thing and can make it possible for us to react quickly and adapt to a changed situation or the requirements of the moment, but if badly managed it can cause many distressing symptoms such as irritability, tiredness, depression, lack of self confidence; and physical manifestations can include sleeping problems, muscular tensions, digestive upsets, skin eruptions, difficulties in concentration and even sexual problems. Here in the UK anxiety and depression are the most common causes of mental illness, and these are very widespread; it has been estimated that around a quarter of the population will suffer from the effects of stress at some time in their lives.
